Professional Officer (Social Work) Policy and Advocacy

The AASW is also responsible for advocating for the profession at many levels including Government, private and in the not for profit sector. The AASW leads the campaign for the registration of the social work profession with the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.

An exciting opportunity is available for a social worker interested in this area to join our small yet effective Policy and Advocacy team. Working closely with the Senior Manager Policy and Advocacy and stakeholders, you will be responsible for performing a range of duties including:

  • Writing and developing social policy material including position statements, submissions, media and advocacy documents in consultation with key stakeholders.
  • Raising the profile and awareness of the AASW and its social policy positions  
  • Maintaining knowledge and awareness of key social policy issues as they appear in the current political debate for relevance and applicability to the AASW and social work profession

The successful applicant will have:

  • High level understanding of contemporary social work policy and practice issues
  • Demonstrated skills in policy submission and Brief writing
  • Ability to work independently and seek support and supervision as required
  • Demonstrated capacity to meet project timelines and deliverables
  • Proven competence in oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in research and policy development or analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in program and resource development or implementation
  • Ability to work with stakeholders who are based Australia wide.

 Relevant information:

  • The position is part time, working 3 days (22.8 hours) a week 
  • This position will be based in North Melbourne

Key Selection Criteria:

  • High level understanding of contemporary social work policy and practice issues
  • Demonstrated experience in research and policy development and analysis
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated experience in program and resource development or implementation
  • Proficiency in the use of information technology, and social media platforms
  • Able to handle periods of high workload and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Ability to work with stakeholders who are based all around Australia, and work in diverse areas
  • Ability to work independently and seek support and supervision as required
