How to be an everyday hero
Being a hero doesn’t need to be all superpowers and wearing your undies on the outside. It’s actually pretty easy to make your community (and the world) a better place – especially if you find your next job with Job Seeker.
Here are our tips for becoming an everyday hero:
Share your skills and time
If you’ve got a bit of spare time on your hands, volunteering can be a great way to help your local community. Volunteer roles take many forms, so there’s bound to be something out there that suits your skills and availability. You can search for opportunities near you on GoVolunteer.
Clean up your neighbourhood
Clean Up Australia Day occurs every year in March, but you don’t need to wait for a particular day to clean up a site near you. Visit the Clean Up Australia Day website to find clean ups happening in your area all year round, or organise your own.
Befriend your neighbours
Sadly it’s not so common these days for us to know our neighbours, but making that effort to get to know the people in your building or street can have a hugely positive impact on someone’s life. It can be particularly important to keep an eye out for elderly neighbours, who might struggle with extreme weather or just need a helping hand now and then.
Grow your own vegetables
Growing your own fruit and veggies at home is cheap, convenient and also helps the environment. If you don’t have any space (or just want to meet some new people), you can also grow your own food at a community garden. Get in touch with your local council to find out if there are any in your area.
Adopt a pet from an animal shelter
If you’re looking for a new furry companion, giving an animal a new chance at life by adopting them from a shelter is the way to go. PetRescue is a good place to start looking for your new best friend, as they list animals from different rescue groups all across Australia.
Go carbon neutral
Choosing carbon neutral products and services means you’re helping to reduce carbon emissions and doing your bit to reduce the damaging effects of global warming. At Job Seeker we’re well on our way to becoming carbon neutral by the end of 2018! You can see a list of certified organisations, products and services and events here.
Avoid using your car when you can
The fewer cars on the road = less harmful pollution in the air = happy days. Consider walking, riding your bike or taking public transport whenever it’s possible.
Find a job through Job Seeker
If you’re serious about being an everyday hero, why not make a career out of it? We only list jobs from community and not-for-profit organisations, so finding your next job through Job Seeker means you’ll be actively working to make the world a better place. Good for you!
